Dinner with Kamui Kobayashi, Toyota’s test and reserve driver. I’ve got to know him through the Toyota Young Driver Programme and we’ve become good friends. We found a Japanese restaurant just off St Catherine’s Street – can’t remember the name – and it was good to catch up. However, it wasn’t a late night because I’ve got to go racing tomorrow.
When I told a British journalist friend that I’d eaten with Kamui, he couldn’t resist pointing out that there’s another Kobayashi in Japan who’s a member of the international federation for competitive eating. That Kobayashi ate 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes, apparently – well, all I can tell you is that Kamui Kobayashi is nothing like that!
As for the on-track action, qualifying today went okay. I’d like to have got into Q3 because I’ve been close to Nico all weekend, but I lost a bit of time on my final run in Q3 and I’ll have to make-do with 12th on the grid tomorrow. I expect there to be a few safety cars in the race, so it’ll be a question of survival of the fittest. Just like Monaco
